Binoculars are certainly one of the most innovative inventions ever designed. They are versatile enough to be used in different settings and for an assortment of activities. For example, binoculars can be used for a number of different purposes such as hunting, bird watching, stargazing and much more. Bird watching is perhaps the most popular reason why people purchase binoculars. Binoculars are basically used to make distant objects appear as though they were closer. They basically work in the same way as telescopes. Furthermore, just like telescopes, binoculars use a pair of refracting lenses. Refracting lenses are those which are able to bend light when it reflects on their surface. So, in a sense, it can be suggested that binoculars are two small telescopes which are joined together by a hinge. Binoculars came about when people looked for a way to optimize their usage of telescopes.

As such, they would join two telescopes together in order to view a distant object with both eyes. These merged telescopes were of course awkward and difficult to use because of their size. This continued to be a problem until the 1900s when a German scientist name Ernst Abbe solved the problem by making a pair of binoculars which used prisms. These prisms worked by reflecting incoming light twice. Prisms can be defined as triangular sections of glass which have been cut in an angular fashion. The purpose of prisms is to give the user a more in-depth view of the distant object.

When viewing a distant object with pair a binoculars, what happens is that the light from the distant objects infiltrates into the front of the binoculars and then passes through the large lens of the binoculars. As a result, an inverted and reversed image is created. In order to correct this image, the prisms within the binoculars make the image appear upright using the magnifying eyepiece lenses of the binoculars. It should be mentioned that binoculars have different magnification power. This magnification power is expressed in numbers. The diameter of a binoculars' objective lens are given in millimeters and this is the measure of how much light the binoculars are able to gather.

When it comes to buying a pair of binoculars, it is imperative that prospective buyers have a comprehensive idea of how binoculars work. This is because binoculars can tend to have some technical jargon associated with them. Understanding how binoculars work will certainly help you make the right choice. Depending on the activity which the binoculars are to be used for, it is also necessary for buyers to consider things like the weight, size, steadiness and color of their prospective pair of binoculars. The best way to ensure that a pair of binoculars will meet your exact requirements is to test them personally before purchasing. This will help you make a more informed decision in terms of your magnification requirements. You also want to make sure that the binoculars have a suitable hand grip. If you wear glasses, it is crucial that the binoculars are compatible with your glasses' lens shape and viewing power.

Also, people should ensure that any binoculars purchased must be sealed for dust and moisture. This is especially important if the binoculars are going to be used during many hours of outdoor activities. It is also worth noting that binoculars can be bought will roof prisms or Porro prisms. Users need to know the difference between both types of prisms because each has its own distinct merits. The type of prism you select should correlate with the purpose for which the binoculars will be used.
